July Wedding Gift #1: Coasters and Pot Holders

July Wedding Gift #1: Coasters and Pot Holders

Hello? Anybody there? It’s been a hot month since the last time I posted on the blog. Let me tell you, July has been crazy. I had an impromptu hiatus due to too many projects, not enough time, and traveling—over 30 hours in the car. I’ll be talking more about that later for a Reflection Sunday post…but let’s talk about one of the projects I pumped out this month!

The first weekend of July we had a wedding in Omaha for a second cousin. So this project is what I put together for her and her husband.

I try to incorporate the wedding colors into whatever I make for wedding gifts. Their invitation featured a lot of flowers and a tree trunk with their initials, but no clear direction for color. I decided to go with a brown, purple, and aqua. I bought these Jelly Rolls at JoAnn’s and figured I could use them for the other weddings this month—keep an eye out for those projects!

I made them four coasters and two pot holders.

Basically, I picked two strips of fabric and sewed them together on both sides and then cut down the middle to get narrower strips.

Then I sewed the strips together to make a nice big piece of striped fabric.

I cut that piece of fabric into rectangles and squares.

For the potholders I decided to just leave the stripes—I thought they made a nice design as is. Don’t forget that the batting needs to be doubled up on potholders!

The squares were too big to be coasters, but there’s an easy way to fix that without just cutting off perfectly nice fabric… triangles! I put two squares together and sewed down either side of a diagonal line down the middle of the squares and cut them apart. I did this twice for each coaster.

Coasters really only need one layer of batting. I also like to do some fairly quick and simple quilting on these by stitching in the ditch with a fun stitch on my machine.

I did the binding like I always do now (check out this post for a better explanation of that).

And there you have it! Some cute coordinating coasters and pot holders!
