Asymmetrical Placemats
Mom suggested these colors for another set of placemats I made, and she liked them so much she asked me to make another set for her to use as a wedding present.
My first step here was making sure that I had big enough pieces of fabric for the backing material. Once I had those pieces secured I cut out strips that, when put together, would make up a rectangle.
I like the idea of placemats that are related in color and idea—but aren’t identical. If you’ve seen my other posts about placemats, you’ve probably noticed this.
Initially I didn’t intend to do a lot of quilting on these. I put them together and did a decorative stitch in the ditch for the quilting along each seam. I did the binding and let them rest for a while.
After a few days I decided that they needed more quilting. And the big blocks of quilt-free space made for a blank canvas. I decided to do something different on each block.
I must say here, that it could have been better executed. Had I chosen to do the quilting before the binding, it would have made for a tighter binding.
However, I think they still turned out nicely and will make a beautiful decoration on a newlywed couple’s table.
