Over Easy

I haven’t written a Food Friday in a long time … you probably noticed. Or maybe you didn’t. That’s okay!

Life has been really busy—and something had to give. I haven’t been doing as much baking or trying new recipes. And when I have, I didn’t want to take the time to document it. You know what? I never anticipated how much time you add to meal prep when you stop and take pictures along the way.

So. All of that to say, I’m hoping to take this blog day in a slightly new direction. Maybe it’s more accurate to say that I’m widening the scope. I will still share my own creations when I have the time. But I’m going to add some food reviews of different local restaurants. By “local” I don’t necessarily mean places local to Grand Island, I mean non-chain places all over, depending on where life finds me!

Last weekend I went to Omaha and my dear friends, Claire and Nathan, were so excited to share this place with me. They took me to Over Easy for brunch, and they raved about these hashbrown rounds. I was excited about it because they were excited.

Now. I don’t like hashbrowns too much, so that wasn’t as appealing to me. They described them as balls of hashbrowns with cheese and bacon deep-fried. It kind of sounded like risotto balls—which I do like. So I was open minded about it. And I like breakfast, so was sure I would find something on the menu.

Let me tell you something. It was all so aesthetically pleasing. I kind of like hipster vibes though, and this place was hipster meets Nebraska and I loved it. I wish I took more pictures. It was one of those experiences that you just have to absorb. (I’m new to this food review thing … I’ll get better!)

Now, they had a dutch baby on the menu—so I ordered a dutch baby. We also got an appetizer of the hashbrown rounds.

When the hashbrown rounds arrived, I got excited. They looked delicious—I didn’t get a picture at all of these. Too excited to eat them, I guess! They are served with two kinds of dipping sauce—their spicy sauce and balsamic ketchup. I’m not a huge ketchup fan, so I didn’t try that one … and I don’t like a lot of spicy, but I was brace and tried it! You guys. It was so tasty. The hashbrown rounds were piping hot, full of gooey cheese and crispy bacon. The sauce was the right level of spicy—no so strong to overwhelm the rest of the food, but just the right amount of kick. I highly recommend them—whether you like hashbrowns or not. Just give them a try!

My dutch baby arrived. It didn’t look quite like the ones I’ve had before. And honestly the texture wasn’t the same. But. The flavor was excellent, and while the texture wasn’t the same, it was fluffy and melted in my mouth. The fresh fruit on top was great—I could have used a bit more of it, to be honest.

Claire had a breakfast sandwich and Nathan had the chicken and waffles. They both said it was good.

I have to touch on the coffee. They had two kinds—regular and seasonal. I can’t remember exactly what was in the seasonal … but I know there was caramel and pecan maybe? It was nutty and smooth … and oh my, I could have drank so much more of it than I did!

Something I really like about Over Easy is that you’re not only supporting a local business—but they are in turn supporting local vendors. All of their food is grown locally. Which I just think is cool. I like locals supporting locals. Good things can (and do) come out of Nebraska.

Yes, indeed.
