Christmas Placemats
I can’t resist a good deal on fabric—and one of my favorites is buying clearance items with a coupon that works on regular priced and sale items. Last year (or maybe the year before … who knows with my fabric hoarding) I found this lovely Christmas material with sparkly cupcakes. Even though I didn’t have a project in mind, I knew I could find a place for it.
When it came to sorting out Christmas gifts for my grandparents my mom suggested I make them each a placemat. I had a collection of Christmas materials on the little table I was using—among them the cupcakes.
Whenever I make cupcakes I take a couple down to my oma and my mom’s parents always comment that they wish they could taste through the computer. It seemed that the Christmas cupcakes would find a good home with my grandparents. So I used that beautiful, but random, fabric as the showcase.
Because I didn’t want to drown out the material with a complicated bit of piecework on the top of the placemats, I went with a simple design of stripes with alternating widths.
The cupcake material also went on the back of each placemat.
I used the same basic method of assembly as I did for the triangle potholders, with a few differences. Instead of two layers of batting, I just used one. And I quilted through all three layers before doing the binding. The binding method is the exact same.
For the quilting I did a simple zig-zag stitch on the seams.
They are simple. But they are beautiful. And they give my grandparents something pretty to use while they celebrate Christmas this year.
Sometimes my random fabric purchases turn into something perfect.
