Delta Kappa Gamma Cupcake Sale
You may have noticed that I did not post at all last week. I took the week off, not because I needed a break or didn’t feel like writing, but because I was busy! Every night last week was spent baking cupcakes, whipping up frosting, or decorating.
All of that hard work because I was getting ready for the biggest cupcake experience of my life. I made over 14 dozen cupcakes to sell at a convention that a teacher friend of mine recommended me for.
It’s funny how life tends to go round in circles, don’t you think? Or maybe I should say round in cupcakes.
My adventure into fancy cake work began with my brother’s graduation cake. I made him the largest cake I’d ever made and layered round cakes and lots of cupcakes. Just a lot of cake.
And then I started working at the elementary school and the teachers became my guinea pigs for all of my cupcake creations. I decided I liked cupcakes best because they were small enough to control and you could easily taste test them.
Who knew that taking cupcakes to work for snacks would land me a decent gig?
My parents used to sell their artwork at craft shows when I was kid. I’ve seen then work a similar venue. Last fall I helped a friend sell her artwork at a craft fair in Omaha. I’m not unfamiliar with the premise. But I’ve never done it with perishable goods.
I planned 1.5 cupcakes per anticipated guest—assuming that while not everyone would buy a cupcake some people might buy two. I made a variety of cupcakes: Strawberry Lemonade, Toffee Caramel Crunch, Peanut Butter Chocolate, Cream Cheese Red Velvet, Vanilla Almond, and White Chocolate with Champagne frosting.
My first customer was another teacher friend of mine. She asked for two of each and caught me off guard. This was not what I prepared for, but I was excited about the possibility.
By the end of the day, I sent my brother to get cupcake boxes twice because my friend was not the only one who wanted more than a couple. I sold out of all of the flavors but the Vanilla Almond and Red Velvet.
Next time I will be sure to have a variety of boxes and I will probably skip the vanilla cake. I found it to be the least popular flavor and I suspect it’s because you can get a vanilla cake anywhere.
This was definitely a learning experience. And a fun one, at that. My booth sat next to a glassworker who was just as sweet as can be. She encouraged me to get business cards for the next time, and she gave me a cardholder she made to encourage me to continue in my cupcake adventures.
I look forward to the next time, very much.
