May 2018 Kansas City Book Haul
May 2018 Kansas City Book Haul
Because of a combination of computer troubles and personal exhaustion, I haven’t posted a blog the last couple of weeks. I took a vacation to visit my once-upon-a-time roommate in Kansas City, and intentionally left my laptop at home. I needed to unplug and get away. (If only I could have left my phone behind, too!)
One of our adventures involved book stores. There’s a severe shortage of bookstores in my area, so I specifically asked if we could go to one (thinking Barnes and Noble) and LeAnn found a whole list of places we could check out! We only stopped at two, but that just means that there’s more to explore next time!
First, we went to Books a Million (BAM) at the Legends. I only got two books here because it wasn’t a discount bookstore.
What Do You Do With A Chance?
by: Kobi Yamada
This is the third book of its type by Yamada, and I loved the other two so had to get this one when I saw it. Apparently, I have not shared the other two here, so be looking for that in the new future! Once I do that, you’ll understand why this automatically landed in my shopping bag.
Star Wars
Most Wanted
by: Rae Carson
I used to buy Star Wars novels like there was no tomorrow. But I haven’t bought any new ones in a while (especially once they deemed the old novels non-canonical). That doesn’t mean I don’t really enjoy them, I do. I have some very fond memories of power housing through some of these—like, staying up all night to read some of them. This one is set before Solo: A Star Wars Story! And I love Rae Carson, I’ve already reviewed her Walk on Earth a Stranger, and so I’m excited to see what she could do in the Star Wars universe.
After BAM, we went to Half Priced Books, and they were having a sale for Memorial Day (everything was 20% off)…so I bought a lot more books there.
The Reason for God
by: Timothy Keller
A friend recently recommended Timothy Keller to me, and this book specifically. So when I found it on the shelf, it was a no brainer. Also, there are notes already written in some of the margins, which I am looking forward to seeing as I read. My brother and sister-in-law also read one of his other books and recommended him as well.
Weird
by: Craig Groeschel
I am subscribed to the Craig Groescel leadership podcast, which I really enjoy. I went into the bookstores looking for his books—and actually found more at Half Priced Books, which I was stoked about.
Divine Direction
by: Craig Groeschel
Like I said, I was looking for books by Craig Groeschel and this one is one of his newer releases, I think. I’m excited to dig into this.
Crash the Chatterbox
by: Steven Furtick
I was pleasantly surprised to find this book. I think I knew Steven Furtick had written book(s?) but I didn’t know any titles or anything like that. But I am subscribed to his podcast at Elevation Church as well.
My Antonia, The Song of the Lark, and O Pioneers!
by: Willa Cather
I was going to list each of these out individually, but I would have ended up saying the same thing over and over again. Willa Cather is a Nebraskan writer, and my parents used to live in her hometown (Red Cloud). I’ve felt oddly connected to her. In high school I read “My Antonia,” but it’s one of those books I feel like I’ll better understand and appreciate as an adult.
BONUS: VeggieTales and LarryBoy
While LeAnn was waiting to see if one of her books was available, I stumbled upon a DVD wall in the children’s section. I can’t tell you how many times my brother and sister-in-law have talked about our memories of watching VeggieTales and our favorite episodes. So when I saw so many of the classics on DVD, I had to grab a handful of them. We had a lot of these growing up, but they were mostly on VHS and therefore unwatchable.
Be looking for my reviews of these books! As you know from my previous haul, it can take me a while to read the books I buy. I tend to have a much longer list than I have time for. But I will get to them eventually, so hang with me!
