Cinder
Cinder
The Lunar Chronicles #1
By: Marissa Meyer
I’m late to this party. Like, really late. A lot of people have already read these books and fallen in love with them. I remember when Cinder first came out—and I don’t know why I didn’t jump all over it. It’s definitely the kind of book that I would be drawn to … but maybe it came out when I was in my phase of YA fiction apprehension? I think that’s it.
All of that to say, I’m sad that I’ve been missing out on this series for so long! I'm glad I picked up in Omaha on my book binge in April. And I can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel.
In case you didn’t know, Cinder, is a retelling of the classic Cinderella—but it’s like Cinderella meets science fiction and is transported to Asia. There are moon people—aka: Lunars. And cyborgs. And disease. Basically, there are a lot of things that make the story different and unique from the original. It’s still a “girl in a hole” story, so it still holds true to the original story formula.
It does deviate from the formula at the end though. You see, not to be too spoiler-y, Cinder doesn’t have that Disney happy ending. But it’s only book one in the series, so if it ended too happily ever after there wouldn’t be room or need for a sequel.
I’m still hopeful that Cinder will end up happy, but I think she has a lot of work to accomplish before that can happen.
Cinder is a book that is well written—I don’t think I ever doubted while I was reading that I would like it. The writing never kicked me out of the narrative. It never distracted me or made me feel like a reader. I felt like I was in the story, and I was deeply invested in the main characters.
There’s a lot of suspense, and I had theories about what would happen; but I think that Meyer far exceeded my expectations. She told the story much better than I would have.
Yet another series that I’m thrilled to be reading! And I don’t have to wait for the sequel to come out—the one benefit of being late to the party!
